Half the Sky Artist Statement
Thesis: Although our daily lives require both women and men, third world countries have shown extreme gender discrimination by giving much more freedom and power to men than women.
The thesis above relates to Half the Sky because this novel focuses primarily on gender discrimination.
This painting is a yin yang sign, but the red part of the circle flows out into the background of the painting. The white in this painting represents the innocence and purity of women, and the red represents the evil and power that men have in third world countries. I wanted to show that women can be controlled and only have so much freedom, and men have so much freedom, and sort of surround the women. The quote that I used came from the novel, and I felt that it was powerful and strongly related to my visual.
I spend hours on this painting making sure the lines were as perfect as possible, and that the painting looked professional. My inspiration for this piece was a picture that I came across on the Internet. It was this picture in black and white. I liked the idea that one of the sides surrounded the other, instead of staying in the circle.

Project Reflection
In the second semester of honors, we completed a book club. I chose to read The Great Gatsby and Half the Sky. I chose to complete my project on Half the Sky because I knew that this book would have an interesting perspective. For my project, I completed a visual piece, as shown above.
Half the Sky definitely had to most impact on me emotionally. This book involved many devastating and sickening stories, so it was a lot to take in. I gained a better understand of the world while reading this book, even though much of the learning wasn't positive aspects of the world. I gained the most from this book because it was relevant to me as a human being, and showed me that I can make a difference even thought the problem of sexism is so big.
This semester of honors was much less stressful than the previous semester. I enjoyed the books that were picked and the reading was not as time consuming as my independent study. Both books opened my eyes to the world around me, and both books were well written. I was happy that the book club took place in second semester because second semester is always more hectic. Overall, I am happy with my participation in the book club,

Semester One Independent Study
Documentation Binder
Project Reflection
The initial assignment for this project was to choose a topic that we could complete an independent study on. I chose the events of 9/11 because I had always found the story around the terrorist to be very interesting. Throughout the project I completed multiple project proposals, entries, and two historical thinking charts. The initial questions for my research can be found on the first project proposal of my documentation binder.
I put a lot of heart and soul into this project. The project required me to enhance my critical thinking and research skills. Much of this project was spent working on my own time, so I knew that committing my time would be important. From this project, I learned that no matter how crunched I am on time, I always manage to get things done. From talking with Ashley, I know this independent study will help me through my senior year project.
I would have revised my project by making a new visual piece and reading more material for my research. First of all, my visual did not fulfill my expectations, so I would have liked to put more time into it. Secondly, I had a lot of reading, but I would more opinions would have helped me create my own opinion.
For others completing this project I would suggest to pick a topic that inspires you. Thats what was so great about my project, is that I never got board researching or reading. Secondly, keep on top of your work. Yes, I did procrastinate, but I always managed to get my work turned in on time. If you start to fall behind, this project will be way more stressful than it should.
